Abstract
Complex Humanitarian Emergencies the Focus of New Nursing NetworkThe first-ever international disaster response network for nurses has been launched by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), aiming to strengthen the response to the health needs of disaster-stricken populations.The network held its first meeting at the ICN Conference in Yokohama, Japan on June 1, 2007.This first meeting was intended to raise awareness of disaster-response issues and develop stress management techniques for emergency situations.The ICN Position Statement on Nurses and Disaster Preparedness can be accessed at www.icn.ch/psdisasterprep01.htm, and a special section of the ICN website is specifically devoted to disaster preparedness (www.icn.ch/disasterprep.htm)to better inform nurses.ICN is also developing disaster nurse competencies and is interested in supporting this work with educational and accreditation programs.
