This entry briefly summarizes the content of the Old EnglishDanielbefore examining its place and putative function in the eleventh‐century Junius Manuscript. The entry goes on to consider the idiosyncratic relationship ofDanielto influential patristic commentaries on the corresponding Old Testament book and reviews scholarly attempts to understand theDaniel‐poet's own concerns. The entry concludes with an account of the relationship betweenDanielandThe Canticles of the Three Youths, an Old English poem of 191 lines located in the Exeter Book that also versifies parts of the biblical Book of Daniel.
