Abstract
This entry briefly summarizes the content of the Old English Daniel before examining its place and putative function in the eleventh‐century Junius Manuscript. The entry goes on to consider the idiosyncratic relationship of Daniel to influential patristic commentaries on the corresponding Old Testament book and reviews scholarly attempts to understand the Daniel ‐poet's own concerns. The entry concludes with an account of the relationship between Daniel and The Canticles of the Three Youths , an Old English poem of 191 lines located in the Exeter Book that also versifies parts of the biblical Book of Daniel.
