Abstract
This chapter begins with a brief discussion of the primary objective of this book, which is to study the years between the fall of Parnell in 1891 to the confirmation of the two-state solution during the inter-war period, from the perspective of the Catholic and nationalist minority of Belfast. It is argued that violent revolution led to sovereign independence for three-quarters of the country more rapidly than a continuation of constitutional nationalism would have done, but at a very heavy cost to the Catholic minority in the remaining quarter. The chapter then presents some background on Joe Devlin.
