Abstract
Some, like Yellowknife, survived. There the minerals were sufficiently valuable for larger-scale ventures, operated by mining companies rather than by smaller, more scattered settlements with much more limited infrastructure and facilities, these settlements are obviously attractive. However, mining company towns often have strict rules over who can live there, who can use the services which they provide and even who can visit the town casually. Because of this local aboriginal people may in fact have very little direct contact with these mining towns.
