Shahilla Shariff was born in Kenya and is Canadian. She is a lawyer and has lived in Hong Kong since 1993. She was a finalist for the International Proverse Prize for unpublished writing in 2011 and won a special publication award for Life Lines, her first poetry collection. I would have taken the Kashmiri shawl, its embroidery bordering a field of monsoon green, a country, food, talk, ancestry, the color of our skin, but they draped it over your coffin. So I took the kitenge – amber, sandalwood, musk – it had the scent of your history and I had a vision of swelling seas and lost coasts, not a frayed maroon cloth patterned with paisleys bundling your old saris in the back of a mahogany armoire.
