Abstract
Thousands of natural gas well heads are scattered around the countryside of central Alberta, Canada. In order to optimize the operation of these wells, gas companies install electronic equipment that monitors and, in some cases, controls the gas flows. The purchase price of the Photovoltaic (PV) system is approximately 3500 USD, which is 15% to 20% of the cost of the entire SCADA system. Thermoelectric generators have been used to power many SCADA units. However, at many of the PanCanadian sites, standard thermoelectric generators cannot be used since they require purely gaseous fuel and the wells produce a mixed-phase mixture of natural gas. Approximately 600 systems have been installed since 1992. The PV modules account for 30% of the initial cost, the batteries 30%, the insulated battery enclosure 15% and the controller 2%. PanCanadian Petroleum is pleased with the system performance. There have been only a small number of system failures, which have been caused by malfunctioning charge controllers.
