En la zona oriental de la Cordillera Patagonica central (45°15-45°40S), al noreste de la ciudad de Coihaique, trabajos detallados de campo y doce nuevas edades K-Ar han permitido documentar la cronologia de las sucesiones volcanicas y establecer su edad del Cretacico Superior- Paleogeno? La unidad mas antigua corresponde a domos rioliticos y riodaciticos del Complejo Volcanico Casa de Piedra, de edad campaniana, que fueron emplazados sobre rocas volcanicas de la Formacion Divisadero, del Aptiano- Albiano? Las lavas andesiticas a daciticas de plagioclasa y dos piroxenos de la Formacion El Toro y los basaltos de Morro Negro, tienen edades del Maastrichtiano. Sin embargo, lavas daciticas con una firma quimica similar a la de la Formacion El Toro afloran topograficamente debajo de los basaltos de Morro Negro, indicando que estas son las lavas mas jovenes de estas tres asociaciones volcanicas. Datos petrologicos y geoquimicos permiten caracterizar los tres episodiosvolcanicos. Las rocas del Complejo Volcanico Casa de Piedra y las andesitas-dacitas de la Formacion El Toro tienen la mineralogia y las caracteristicas geoquimicas de magmas asociados a subduccion: fuerte enriquecimiento en Tierras Raras livianas (LREE) y elementos altamente incompatibles (Rb, Th, U y K), y anomalia negativa en Nb-Ta. Los basaltos de Morro Negro muestran un patron diferente en los diagramas de Tierras Raras y multi-elementos. Sus caracteristicas geoquimicas se asemejan a los basaltos cuaternarios de Murta, considerados como relacionados con la apertura de una ventana astenosferica, y los diferencian de las de los basaltos eocenos de Balmaceda, mas parecidos a lavas de tipo intraplaca.
