NOUS DEVONS cette tourdissante monographie de sociologie historique l'un des meilleurs spcialistes europens de l'Indonsie, par ailleurs familier du Pacifique insulaire, et aux multiples collaborateurs qu'il a su s'attirer au cours d'une enqute de plusieurs annes tant Java qu'en Nouvelle-Caldonie ; ainsi de ses deux cosignataires, ns dans cette le, de familles d'origine javanaise et relevant ds lors de la catgorie des niaoulis dans le parler caldoche 1 . Si l'on a si peu prt attention aux immigrants de Java dans l'histoire d'une le propos de laquelle les commentaires n'ont oepas manqu ces dernires dcennies, c'est sans doute du fait de leur caractre minoritaire (5 000 recenss actuellement [p. 151] contre 7 500 entre 1948 et 1955 [p. 117], pour une population totale de 240 000 personnes environ au recensement de 2004). Mais c'est sans doute aussi du fait d'une rsilience discrte que l'auteur renvoie la tradition d'un pays du non-dit (p. 278).
