On rsistait d'une manire trs trange avec le jazz , disait-il, on portait la reefer jacket des musiciens noirs amricains et on parlait anglais (Colleyn & De Clippel 1999).Cette exprience de jeune homme avait d le marquer, car nous l'avons toujours connu par la suite dans cette tenue la fois lgante et dcontracte : blazer bleu, chemise ouverte sur un foulard, pantalon blanc.Bien plus tard, pour voquer la chorgraphie du filmmaker 1 , voluant la camra l'paule pour filmer un rituel africain, il n'hsitait pas recourir la mtaphore du jazz.Lorsque le cinaste met en scne la ralit, expliquait-il, lorsqu'il improvise ses cadrages, ses mouvements, ses temps de tournage, il fait des choix subjectifs dont la seule clef est son inspiration.Le chef-d'oeuvre est atteint quand celle-ci est l'unisson de l'inspiration collective, mais cela est si rare, cela demande une telle connivence, que je ne peux la comparer qu' ces moments exceptionnels d'une jam session entre le piano de Duke Ellington et la trompette de Louis Amstrong (Rouch 1981 : 31).
