Abstract
The literature of the Victorian period regularly appeared in illustrated form, regardless of genre, format, and audience. The explosion of illustrated books and periodicals came about through both social and technological changes. By the end of the century, illustrated literature in diverse forms was available for Victorians across generations and classes. The knowledge that their work would be illustrated affected writers, while the interplay of picture and word contributed to readers’ understanding of genre and interpretation. As a multimedia form combining image and text, illustrated works highlighted collaborative authorship and trained readers in verbal/visual literacy, contributing to modern visual culture in a newly industrialized and urbanized society.
