Abstract
John Skelton (c. 1460–1529) was a late medieval English poet and translator, tutor to the young Henry VIII, and Oxford poet laureate. Born in the north of England, possibly Yorkshire, he was educated at Cambridge and (likely) Oxford, where – according to William Caxton – he was made poet laureate of the university. Following his studies he was associated with the powerful northern Percy family, before entering royal service with the Tudors in late 1488. He occupied the role of tutor to the future Henry VIII from 1496 until 1502/3, in addition to taking Holy Orders in 1498. By 1503/4 he had become the rector of the parish church of St. Mary's, in Diss, Norfolk, a post that while lucrative, does not seem to have been to his liking. By 1513 he returned to royal service under the new king, Henry VIII, and took on the role of orator regius , a role that seems to have been at once secretarial, diplomatic, and poetic. As a poet, Skelton's work is extensive and wide‐ranging, from praise poems for his patrons to flytings for his foes, works of advice, and learned translations. He died in 1529 and was buried before the high altar in St. Margaret's, Westminster.
