Le point de vue adopté pour mener des recherches sur le coaching en gestion est généralement prescriptif vis-à-vis de la pratique. Ces recherches s’inscrivent dans des modèles de rationalité technique et conçoivent le coaching selon un découpage professionnel prédéterminé et statique. Mais qu’en est-il du point de vue que les coachs eux-mêmes portent sur leur pratique professionnelle en émergence ? Quel « territoire » revendiquent-ils ? Cette contribution rend compte d’une thèse en cours qui, à l’appui d’une perspective interactionniste, interroge le développement d’un groupe formé par des coachs en gestion dans la mosaïque des professions. À partir d’entretiens de groupe menés auprès de cinq d’entre eux, la recherche tend à envisager que les frontières entre leur pratique et celles d’autres acteurs de l’accompagnement au développement professionnel sont moins fixées par une étiquette professionnelle que par des processus de négociation de sens. En m’intéressant aux dynamiques qui conduisent les coachs à construire mutuellement leur histoire professionnelle, je propose une nouvelle façon de concevoir le coaching en gestion.
