Abstract
The natural gas industry in Canada has been going through deregulation to varying degrees over the past quarter century. This deregulation has had an affect on the price of gas, the marketing of gas, and the business practices in the industry. It has also had an affect on all sectors of the industry at various stages during this deregulation. This project is a qualitative analysis of the effect that these changes in the industry regulation have had on the downstream (transmission and distribution) sectors of the industry focusing on one company, Westcoast (Duke) Energy. This analysis was conducted using a case study to determine the current state of deregulation in British Columbia, the industry structure in the province, a review of the changes W estcoast underwent as a result of the commodity price deregulation, and the potential effects further deregulation might have on one of the major players in the industry.
