Abstract
Unlike most non‐hegemonic museologies, critical museology is based on the articulation of specific and clearly identifiable epistemological positions, methodological interdictions, and experimental exhibition practices. The foundation of the discipline is founded on a synthesis of perspectives including historical constructivism, the agentive role of collectors and collections within specific cultural contexts, the social construction and reconstruction of materials and objects, and the critique of empiricism. The entry describes the focus of critical museology to be on the practices of applied or operational museology and the range of heritage regimes, exhibitionary complexes, and the competing political positions and policies with which it is always entangled. The entry ends by identifying major institutional exponents of critical museology and examining some of the far‐reaching implications of its applications.
