Période mal connue et mal aimée de l’histoire littéraire en Belgique francophone, le milieu du xxe siècle est associé le plus souvent au néoclassicisme pratiqué par des auteurs qui ont tout fait pour élever la littérature à la hauteur d’un universalisme abstrait qui est vite passé de mode. La critique a plutôt tourné son regard du côté des « irréguliers du langage », selon l’expression de Marc Quaghebeur.
