Abstract
Frans Gruzenhout, The Revolutionary Festival in the Netherlands (1780-1806) : from Utopia to Indifference. The patriotic festivals celebrated between 1781 and 1787 are of interest for a variety of reasons. On the one hand, they borrowed from the national past and updated a specific iconography ; on the other, they repudiated everything pertaining to the house of Orange. Their highly Utopian character differentiates them from the French fêtes of the years 1789-1794, but also from the Batavian festivals which sought inspiration from the Parisian model without firing the enthusiasm of the sister republic, little inclined moreover to squander public funds on their use. The Minister of National Education thought it preferable to reorganize public schooling.
