Abstract
Digby 23 is composed of two twelfth‐century manuscripts: the first a copy of Plato's Timaeus , which in the thirteenth century was bequeathed to Oseney Abbey, Oxford, and the second the earliest copy of the Chanson de Roland . The Digby Roland was probably copied in about the second quarter of the twelfth century, although a later date is not impossible. There is no particular reason to suppose that this manuscript was ever associated with a jongleur or minstrel. There are points of cultural similarity between the two parts, both probably copied in an academic milieu, but they may not actually have been bound together until as late as the seventeenth century.
