Abstract
Abstract Aelred (1110–67), educated at Durham and at the court of David I, king of Scots, was successively novice‐master at Rievaulx (1142–43), abbot of Revesby (1143–47), and abbot of Rievaulx (1147–67). As abbot, he was effective in administration, dedicated to his communities, and a spiritual master. He was the author of numerous historical, hagiographical, theological, and spiritual works, and played a major role in the intellectual, religious, and political life of twelfth‐century England. On his death, he was buried at Rievaulx and, though never formally canonized, became the center of a local cult.
