Abstract
Quoique l’image en tant que domaine général soit considérée comme un médium distinct d’autres médiums de représentation — comme la parole et le son — les analyses de l’image ne sont pas toutes pour autant d’ordre médiatique. De nombreuses approches et perspectives parfaitement validées comme formes de connaissance ne prennent d’ailleurs pas en compte la question de l’image en tant que médium. L’approche médiatique constitue, pourtant, une des voies possibles de la connaissance de l’image; même si elle ne résout pas à elle seule les problèmes posés par l’image, cette approche reste indispensable dans une démarche d’interprétation de l’image qui se veut intégrale. Dans cet article, nous proposons un certain nombre de points de vue qui peuvent aider à déterminer les aspects qui mettent en relief la condition médiatique de l’image inscrite, en proposant une définition des dimensions qui permettent de la considérer comme un objet matériel réalisé au moyen de techniques précises, agencé et lié à une historicité culturelle.
