[1875-48-5] C8H6N2O2 (MW 162.15) InChI = 1S/C8H6N2O2/c9-10-7(11)5-3-1-2-4-6(5)8(10)12/h1-4H,9H2 InChIKey = KSILMCDYDAKOJD-UHFFFAOYSA-N (the reagent serves as a source of nitrene; used for the synthesis of aziridines, sulfoximines, and substituted hydrazines) Physical Data: mp 200–202 °C. Solubility: soluble in ethanol, methanol, water, DMSO, and DMF. Partially soluble in acetonitrile. Form Supplied in: off-white powder with 90% + purity. Typical impurity is phthalhydrazide, which is formed from N-aminophthalimide under acidic and basic conditions.1 Analysis of Reagent Purity: IR (Nujol): 3340.0, 1784.2, 1722.9, 1662.8, 1603.6, 1494.5, 1410.0, 1198.2, 716.4 cm−1;2 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6): δ 5.0 (m, 2H, NH2), 7.81 (m, 2H, arom), 8.0 (m, 2H, arom); 13C NMR (DMSO-d6): δ 123.6, 130.9, 135.2, 167.7. Preparative Methods: can be prepared by reaction between phthalimide and hydrazine in refluxing ethanol;1a electrophilic amination of potassium phthalimide;3 reaction between phthalic anhydride and tert-butyl carbazate in refluxing chloroform.4 Purification: recrystallization from 96% ethanol (1 part in 44 parts at boiling point). N-Aminophthalimide sublimes in vacuo at ca. 150 °C. Resolidifies after melting and remelts at 338–341 °C.5 Handling, Storage, and Precautions: stable under normal temperatures and pressure. N-Aminophthalimide should be stored in a tightly closed container below 4 °C/39 °F away from incompatible substances, excess heat, and strong oxidants. Possible decomposition products: nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, etc. The toxicological properties of N-aminophthalimide have not been fully investigated, although it may cause irritation in eye, skin, and respiratory and digestive tracts.6
