Abstract
Abstract Comites , singular comes , literally “counts,” could be a number of things, from officials and commanders to elite cavalry regiments. Originally, the term applied to high‐ranking senators and equites who accompanied the emperor, and it was only later that it was applied to military officers, officials, and cavalry regiments. The term seems to have become formalized under Constantine I.
