Abstract
Wayne Johnston's novels, memoir, and short fiction have received international attention and generated controversy in his native Canada. From the humorous adventures of Bobby O'Malley to the desperate ambitions of Joe Smallwood, Johnston's books are mainly set on the island of Newfoundland and focus on Newfoundlanders' struggles with political, financial, and cultural hardships; generational division between male relatives is among his foremost themes. His books highlight the often difficult emotions that arise between fathers who struggle to define their familial and national roles, and sons who attempt to retain Newfoundland identities in unsettled times.
