[1571-13-7] C8HCl4NO2 (MW 284.91) InChI = 1S/C8HCl4NO2/c9-3-1-2(8(15)13-7(1)14)4(10)6(12)5(3)11/h(H,13,14,15) InChIKey = LPUUYZVKCMCHLO-UHFFFAOYSA-N (derivatives used as amine-protecting groups) Physical Data: colorless blades, mp 338–339 °C (acetic acid);1 336–337 °C (nitrobenzene);2 yellow needles, mp 345–347 °C (N,N-dimethylformamide).3 Solubility: soluble in pyridine and aqueous sodium carbonate; soluble with difficulty in ethanol, ether, and benzene; and slightly soluble in N,N-dimethylformamide, nitrobenzene, and in hot acetic acid (1 g/100 mL). Form Supplied in: yellow powder; widely available. Purification: recrystallization can be done from acetic acid,1 nitrobenzene,2 or N,N-dimethylformamide.3 Handling, Storage, and Precautions: tetrachlorophthalimide is an irritant to the eyes and to the respiratory system. Avoid contact and inhalation. Wash thoroughly after handling. Store in a cool dry place. Its chemical, physical, and toxicological properties have not been thoroughly investigated, but it should be noted that phthalimide is a teratogen.
