Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy measures free induction decay signals that spin-active atomic nuclei emit when excited by a radio-frequency pulse in a static magnetic fi eld. The spectrum shows peaks whose position, area, and multiplicity, correlate with molecular structure, bonds, functional groups, and purity. We highlight the strength, detection limits, applications, and NMR sources of error. A bibliometric keyword map identifi es 5 research clusters: solid-state analysis; biology and metabolomics; crystal structure; liquid-state analysis for polymers, aqueous solutions, nano-particles, drug delivery; and chemosensors.
