Abstract: In the century dividing the publication of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s ‘‘The Great Stone Face’’ from Gutzon Borglum’s completion of the presidential monument at Mt. Rushmore, the United States came of age as a world power. This essay discusses the strained relationship between Henry James and Theodore Roosevelt in order to highlight some of the tensions and contradictions that characterized this passage. Roosevelt’s inclusion in the monument at Mt. Rushmore both recalls Hawthorne’s story and symbolically corroborates some of James’s most serious reservations about the cultural fate of the nation.
