Abstract This article reviews the history leading up to the development of the first sampling‐related standards from research in the 1920s following through to the very formative years of World War II and beyond. The transition in subsequent years from military‐specific standards to national standards and then to international standards is also covered. Finally, the array of sampling inspection standards currently available from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is briefly reviewed.
