Abstract
Irish poetry in this period between Romanticism and the early rise of modernism is rich and diverse. The focus here is on canonical streams in three periods – the period immediately after Catholic Emancipation, Young Ireland poetry, and responses to the Great Famine – and the shifting emphasis on redefining Ireland and understanding it in global and historical terms. Masculinist ideals and nostalgia give a reactionary edge to a radical poetics tied to a nationalist resistance to British rule, while ongoing sectarian tensions cannot overshadow the importance of faith and myriad efforts to understand the colonial situation in those terms.
