81 Ce livre, fruit d'une réflexion ample et parfaitement maîtrisée, est important à plus d'un titre.Au delà de l'analyse des conceptions libérales en matière de gestion du crime et de la pauvreté dans les sociétés occidentales du XIX e siècle -le titre ne doit pas tromper : le Québec est constamment comparé aux pays européens fondés sur la même logique sociale du libéralisme -l'auteur interroge avec pertinence l'historiographie contemporaine et ses impasses et développe une analyse du fonctionnement des sociétés autour de la notion de régulation.Le large espace géographique pris en compte comme le niveau d'analyse retenu en font un livre original qui suscitera débats par les nombreuses hypothèses avancées remettant en cause certaines idées reçues.
