Abstract
ONLandscapes by Susan Herrington is a contribution to Routledge's Thinking in Action series. The series features concise paperbacks offering accessible yet nuanced accounts of a wide range of topics of philosophical and cultural interest. Landscape is definitely a worthy addition to the list of topics currently covered, and Herrington seems well placed to lead the tour. A licensed landscape architect as well as an academic, she has at her fingertips a wealth of examples to illustrate her points. Her book begins with a description of Martha Schwartz's Bagel Garden (a temporary installation of 96 lacquered bagels in Boston's Back Bay) and ends with a description of Louis G. le Roy's Ecokathedraal (a hand-built landscape in Mildam, Holland, constantly renewed by deliveries of municipal construction debris which is incorporated into the continually changing display). In between are accounts of landscapes, parks, and gardens from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan. Twenty-four well-chosen photographs help introduce readers to the sites in question, while Herrington's able interpretations encourage deeper understanding.
