Abstract
My research, which began as a study of drama education in a particular context, led me to some very provocative questions concerning gender, class, multiracial/culturalism and girls’ gender constructions in schools. That context was a single-sex school for girls in the Metropolitan Separate School Board (now called the Toronto Catholic District School Board). This single sex girls’ school was founded by an order of nuns originally from Le Puy, France. They opened their first girls’ secondary school in Toronto in 1857. But, in 1984 when Catholic schools in Ontario won the legal right to full funding (previously government funding for Catholic schools extended only to grade eight), they became public institutions despite their special denom inational status. What has resulted in a cosmopolitan urban center like Toronto is a rather odd combination of the former private secondary system (middle and upper-middle class signs and symbols like uniforms, liturgical celebrations, single-sex schools) with a truly inner city, urban population largely of lower socioeconomic status, mainly not of Anglo-Saxon heritage, and many being first generation Canadian or refugee students.
