Abstract
On December 6, 1989, a man entered an engineering classroom at the University of Montreal, separated the women from the men, and opened fire on the women, yelling, “You're women, you're going to be engineers. You're all a bunch of fucking feminists. I hate feminists!” Fourteen women were killed and another 10 women and 4 men were injured. The shooter then killed himself, leaving a suicide note that laid out a clear misogynist motive for his actions. The massacre occurred in the broader context of a backlash against feminist campaigns targeting campus rape culture and women's underrepresentation in engineering, galvanizing university response to sexist traditions in engineering schools. The massacre also elicited a national response, including the White Ribbon Campaign highlighting men's role in ending violence against women, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women, and stricter gun control regulations across Canada.
