Abstract
The text of the Old English poem called The Husband's Message has been affected by burn damage to the manuscript, and in addition poses some major problems of interpretation: whether the poem includes the preceding Riddle 60 ; whether the speaker is a human messenger or a piece of inscribed wood; and who or what is named in the mysterious runes at the end. It is generally accepted that this is a love poem of a formal kind, the message of a lord to his lady, bidding her take ship and join him now he is no longer an unhappy exile but a prosperous ruler. The narrator ends by calling upon the runes, and whatever they represent, to confirm his master's troth.
