His research interests include the role of lakes in landscape scale carbon cycling.He is particularly interested in how lake metabolism depends on how ecosystem boundaries are drawn, the nature of the lake and the external carbon loads, and the time scale of interest.His general interest in ecological scaling issues underlies recent work in cross-scale analyses of lake data sets.Through partnerships with microbial ecologists, physical limnologists, and computer scientists at the University of Wisconsin and in the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON), he uses sensor network measurements, coupled physical-chemical-biological models, and signal processing to study lake carbon cycling.
