Abstract
The release of aluminum (Al) from Al-bearing minerals to soil solutions and natural waters during weathering results in a number of soluble Al species, organohydroxy Al–clay complexes, poorly crystalline Al hydroxides, and crystalline Al hydroxide minerals. This chapter focuses on both the solid Al oxide mineral phases and on the soluble crystalline Al species that influence physical, chemical, and biological processes in aquatic systems. It provides information on the structure, composition, morphology, chemical and physical properties, distribution, and formation of Al hydroxides. Because of the abundance of highly reactive, undercoordinated O atoms on the edges of gibbsite and boehmite, Al hydroxides are important in the sorption of various metals. The chapter discusses the impacts of gibbsite on the properties of Oxisols and the impacts of soluble and poorly crystalline Al as highly reactive and potentially toxic species that occur in a wide variety of soils and natural waters.
