The importance of capital budgeting for sport organizations is discussed in this chapter. A brief overview of good and bad capital investment decisions leads to the definition of capital budgeting. From there, an overview of the capital budgeting process is given with examples provided from within the sport industry. Five methods of capital budgeting are then discussed, including payback period, discounted payback period, net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), and modified internal rate of return (MIRR). The strengths and weaknesses of each method applied within a sport context are included with an overview of the calculations needed to analyze the capital project. Finally, post-audit analysis is discussed as well. Several examples are used to frame the discussion, including the impact of legislation on capital projects, stadium and arena districts, and Montreal’s Olympic Stadium.
