Au Gabon, comme dans plusieurs pays, la question de l’échec scolaire est centrale et comporte des répercussions économiques et sociales importantes. Bien que disposant de compilations statistiques sur la situation, aucune recherche ne s’est intéressée jusqu’à maintenant à éclairer cette question de l’intérieur, soit du point de vue des élèves. D’où le propos de la recherche doctorale que j’ai récemment menée de convier des élèves gabonais du secondaire à livrer leur expérience sur le sujet, par le biais d’entretiens individuels et collectifs. En m’appuyant sur une perspective qui conjugue interactionnisme symbolique et didactique, je me suis plus précisément intéressé au sens qu’ils accordent aux situations et relations ayant marqué leur expérience scolaire. L’analyse de leurs discours a permis de faire ressortir que l’échec scolaire participerait d’un ensemble de médiations dont le rapport aux enseignants et enseignantes et, plus spécifiquement, la « face négative » de ce rapport.
