Abstract
L’individualisme est indissociable de la modernité où l’individu occupe une place centrale. Sans s’opposer au principe d’holisme (car l’individu ne peut s’incarner sans société), l’individualisme est surtout caractéristique des sociétés occidentales. Avec la mondialisation, elle a toutefois tendance à s’imposer de plus en plus dans d’autres civilisations. Elle s’oppose ainsi à la diversité culturelle tout en prônant, paradoxalement, une volonté d’émancipation.
