Abstract
Norman Bethune, a Canadian surgeon who died in 1939 in a remote village in China during World War II, had a most unusual kind of fame. Virtually unknown in his home country of Cana-da, Bethune’s name is known to almost every Chinese schoolchild; his eulogy written by Mao Tsetung is mandatory reading in textbooks. In China, there are hospitals bearing his name and museums dedicated to his life and career as a field surgeon who worked for the Chinese Communist army in the Sino–Japanese war. He had acquired celebrity after death in a country far from his own, where he did not even speak the language. Roderick Stewart’s book, The Mind of Norman Bethune, reveals a man who was extraordinary, colorful, and curious. The bulk of Stewart’s book is an extensive collection of Bethune’s letters, speeches, artwork, creative writing, and photographs, organized by a chronological sketch of his life. This book was not meant to be a biography, which the same author had already published, but rather a window for the reader to peer into the mind of the man.
