Abstract
As Québécois women writers of the 21st century engage with the representation of contemporary crises, new paradigms of female subjectivity and feminist agency emerge in their work. By focusing on Catherine Mavrikakis’s Les derniers jours de Smokey Nelson (2011), this article shows how a sense of Americanism and its local and global turmoil puts into question the female individual’s place and agency in the world. In the end, several premises of feminism find themselves redirected within women’s writing, especially in the aftermath of a 1970s radical feminism, which has profoundly impacted Québécois literature. Along with Lori Saint-Martin, we will call this ambivalent connection to feminism and its unfamiliar re-inscriptions metafeminism, to better understand women’s writing in Québec today and the undeniable impact of a difficult America on its configuration.
