Abstract
Mandeville's Travelsis a mid‐fourteenth‐century prose traveler's guide to the biblical, marvelous, imaginary, and existing easts. It presents itself as the memoir of an English Knight of St. Albans, John Mandeville, who spent some three‐and‐a‐half decades overseas. About half of the text provides lore and legends of interest to Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land, the rest material of interest to anyone traveling farther east as far as the Earthly Paradise. The account of sectarian Christians and non‐Christians is generally neutral, sometimes even positive, but the representation of Jews is uniformly hostile. Composed originally in French, either in England or on the Continent, it was one of the most popular medieval books of its day, being translated into some ten languages. In Britain it circulated in English and Latin as well as French. An Irish translation was made in the late fifteenth century, a Welsh in the late sixteenth.
