Abstract
Stephen Hawes (born c. 1470, d. before 1529) was a Tudor court poet, and largely wrote under the auspices and patronage of Henry VII, serving as the groom of his chamber. He saw himself as writing in the tradition of John Lydgate and Geoffrey Chaucer, and is often thought of as being remarkably “medieval” for a sixteenth‐century writer. He wrote five surviving poems, the longest of which is The Pastime of Pleasure . He is often perceived as prefiguring the allegorical romance of Edmund Spenser, and is important to the history of personification allegories; he also provides a significant window into the rhetorical concerns of Tudor politics as it related to poets.
