Abstract
Abstract The English empire to 1707 consisted of two territorial groupings. The first was the composite monarchy of England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and various surrounding islands. This composite monarchy of multiple kingdoms was, since Anglo‐Saxon times, increasingly but fitfully controlled by the English crown and by 1707 was largely united into a single “kingdom of Great Britain.” The second territorial group comprising the English empire was the collection of colonies, predominantly those across the Atlantic Ocean, that were settled by subjects of the composite monarchy after 1585. The imperial ideology that unified the empire was the assertion that a centralized, royal authority centered in England held both imperium (sovereignty) and dominium (possession) over the “British Empire.”
