Résumé Pour Droysen, l’histoire n’est pas saisie par une « philosophie de l’histoire » dans la mesure où cette dernière la considère comme une « illustration de la logique », « l’automate d’un mouvement dialectique dicté par un système ». Une « théologie de l’histoire » serait davantage recevable « si la menace n’existait pas qu’elle ouvre grandes ses portes à un dilettantisme encore plus fâcheux, à une intentionnalité encore plus importune » : c’est-à-dire à un arbitraire établissant des finalités au gré des reconstructions auxquelles le système a dû procéder. La solution vers laquelle tend Droysen est celle d’un Kant qui « maîtriserait de manière critique, non pas le matériau historique, mais l’attitude théorique et pratique à l’égard de l’histoire et dans l’histoire, et qui, sur un mode à peu près analogue à celui de la loi morale, de l’impératif catégorique, montrerait la source vivante dont procède la vie historique de l’humanité ».
