Abstract
Abstract The global village is an idea originally propounded by the Canadian media theorist Marshall McLuhan (1911–1980). He argued that due to the development and expansion of mass media of communication, the world was becoming village‐like. McLuhan introduced the idea in his famous work of the early 1960s including The Gutenberg Galaxy (1962) and Understanding Media (1964). Discussions of the idea occur in his other books and it forms the title of a posthumous publication, The Global Village (1989, with Bruce R. Powers).
