Abstract
The cover photo shows the vasculature in ischaemic optic neuropathy as demonstrated by Pollock et al. in this issue of Acta. Yin et al. in China confirm the association between glaucoma and retinal vein occlusion, with primary angle-closure glaucoma increasing risk of CRVO fivefold. Lang et al. in USA and Italy conclude that vascular dysfunction likely results from changes in metabolic demand due to death of photoreceptors in the retina. Xu et al. in China suggest that individuals with glaucoma may have an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. de Smet et al. in the Netherlands, Switzerland, UK, USA, Italy and Saudi Arabia tested robotics in simulated vitreoretinal surgery. Robotics increase precision, but reduce visualization of the target surface. Petersen & Bek in Denmark found that unilateral Coats’ disease is accompanied by vasodilatation in the affected eye but impaired pressure autoregulation in both eyes. Mohan et al. in India and the Netherlands found that amblyopic eyes have higher mean oxygen saturations than the fellow eyes. Taipale et al. in Finland describe an association between the use of pupil expansion device and risk of clinically significant pseudophakic cystoid macular oedema. Blom et al. in Oslo found risk of postoperative endophthalmitis to be about 1/1000 in cataract surgery and 1/3000 with intravitreal injections. Jørgensen et al. in Denmark and Germany developed and validated multiple-choice questionnaire that enables an evidence-based approach to measuring, evaluating and certifying the theoretical knowledge necessary for direct ophthalmoscopy. Belitsky et al. in Sweden suggest that selective laser trabeculoplasty is effective treatment for many but not all patients with glaucoma. Muijzer et al. in the Netherlands found that manually dissected and microkeratome-dissected grafts performed similarly with respect to vision and endothelial cell loss assessed 1 year after surgery. Idrus et al. in Indonesia and Finland suggest photoactivated chromophore corneal cross-linking as an option for treating patient with infectious keratitis who do not respond to antibiotic therapy. Muñoz et al. in Spain compared EX-PRESS glaucoma shunt versus nonpenetrating deep sclerectomy with Esnoper implant in combined surgery for open-angle glaucoma in a prospective randomized study. Both procedures were associated with similar IOP reduction and use of additional medical therapy at 12 months. EX-PRESS surgery required more postoperative interventions and had more complications. Pillunat et al. in Germany propose the Dresden biomechanical glaucoma factor based on dynamic corneal response deformation and corneal thickness parameters, to discriminate between healthy and normal pressure glaucoma eyes. Aref et al. in USA measured retinal blood flow and oxygen saturation in glaucomatous individuals and correlate visual field loss with impaired oxygen delivery in the retina. Yang et al. in China propose a new image-based software application for the measurement of tear meniscus height. Al-Hayouti in UK and Germany used imaging technologies to demonstrate damage to meibomian glands in children with blepharokeratoconjunctivitis. Skalicka et al. in Czech Republic and UK describe bilateral corneal opacities in paraproteinemic patients with monoclonal gammopathy. Wang et al. in China and USA demonstrate reduced retinal circulation on colour Doppler flow imaging and OCT angiography in RP patients compared to the controls. Pauleikhoff et al. in Germany, Australia, UK, USA, Switzerland and Germany investigate the progression characteristics of ellipsoid zone loss in eyes with macular telangiectasia type 2 and find a correlation between structural and visual changes. de Oliveira et al. in Brazil used optical coherence tomography angiography to identify choroidal neovascularization in eyes with pigment epithelial detachment with subretinal/intraretinal fluid with accuracy of 95%. Omari et al. in USA reveal that panretinal photocoagulation reduces reading ability and other aspects of macular function. Martínez-Roda et al. in Spain examined the effect of cataract on quality of retinal images. Sun et al. in China and USA found low concentration of triamcinolone in plasma after sub-Tenon injection. Mild plasma cortisol suppression and blood sugar elevation were noted. Kansal et al. in Canada respond to the paper by Behndig et al. on gender and IOL prediction. Pimenta et al. in Portugal found that 1 in 4 patients with glaucoma were not treated according to accepted guidelines. Tong et al. in Canada, the Netherlands and USA used intraoperative anterior segment OCT to visualize Bowman layer transplantation. Periti et al. in Italy describe smaller foveal avascular zones in area in preterm compared to full-term children. This issue of Acta has three review articles and several exciting original papers, which I hope will provide pleasant and informative reading.
