Abstract
The rise of travel writing and its contribution to knowledge generally and literary writing specifically is a defining characteristic of the nineteenth century, an era whose newly mobile citizens loved to go places. As actual travel became more accessible to a broader spectrum of the population, the idea of travel coalesced into a dominant Victorian metaphor for the workings of the imagination and figured as a powerful vehicle for moving readers, intellectually and emotionally, to other worlds. The expansion of the British Empire provided the major impetus for the Victorian outpouring of travel writing. Along with growing audiences eager to learn about faraway places, there was also an explosion in the range of travelers who recorded their exploits. In studying this body of writing, scholarship has focused on three distinct figures that emerged on the Victorian landscape: the explorer, the tourist, and the traveler.
