Abstract
A prominent literary figure during her own lifetime, Dinah Maria Craik (née Mulock; 1826–87) is today remembered primarily for her 1856 novel,John Halifax, Gentleman, a paean to the Victorian middle‐class ethos of self‐determination and self‐help. A prolific novelist, poet, and essayist, Craik was among the best known and most widely read writers of her era. Craik was a strong advocate of women's rights in novels likeA Brave Lady(1870) andHannah(1871), as well as a writer of children's literature, most notablyThe Little Lame Prince(1879). Her work today figures importantly in Victorianist disability studies, feminist criticism, and children's literature.
