Sustainability concerns conditions required to assure the durability of human life and society. In an urban context it pertains largely to the relation between cities and their environment. To endure, cities must respect environmental prerequisites for the wellbeing of their residents and their own existence. In this regard, they must avoid damaging their own environment and contributing to broader‐scale degradation of environmental conditions, as in the case of the emission of greenhouse gases. Sustainable approaches to cities can take two forms. The first consists of a design of new cities around sustainable development principles. The environmental rewards of this first approach are, however, limited by the small number of entirely new cities master‐planned according to these principles. The second involves the adoption of far more common measures that are less comprehensive, such as buildings that require less energy, and urban form and transportation policies that reduce car use.
