Abstract
Richard Hakluyt was the outstanding advocate of English exploration of and settlement in North America between 1580 and 1600, and he continued to take an influential part in North American occasions in the later years of his life. In the decade between the appearance of The principall naviga&s; Hons and the publication of volume III of The principal navigations in 1600, Hakluyt was less closely concerned in North American voyaging, if only because there were very few expeditions in which to be involved. The largest body of materials on North America surviving from the 1589 edition related to the English ventures of 1578–1588. Hakluyt did not include anything at all on the English fishery in south-eastern Newfoundland between 1583 and 1600 during which time it had proliferated at the expense of the Portuguese and Basques. In general, with the exceptions mentioned, Hakluyt presented in 1600 a very adequate coverage of the voyages which had revealed North America to Europeans.
