Abstract
The concept of postindustrial society is part of a typology of social evolution. Agrarian societies were displaced by the Industrial Revolution and the social changes that accompanied it. By the early twentieth century the rich countries of Western Europe and North America had become “industrial societies.” Subsequent economic and social change undermined their core institutions. The social form that emerged has been labelled “postindustrialism.” The earlier writings on this subject focused primarily on the political consequences of the transitions. More recent work broadens the range of consequences of interest to include the character of employment, the fate of the welfare state, and the design of cities.
